Before going too far in a lesson it is important to make sure students are with you and are not lost. This is particularly important in a multi-level class where some students may be keeping up with you while others may be totally lost.

To review comprehension, try some of the following activities as a whole class activity or in pairs or small groups:

  1. Use colored comprehension signal cards so students can indicate how much they understand: Red (nothing), Yellow (most but not all), and Green (almost everything).

  2. Use True/False cards for students to respond to your statements to see if they understand what you’ve said.

  3. Use graphic organizers or simple lists to have students represent key ideas from the presentation.

  4. Have students retell key elements of the presentation using key words, graphics, or storyboards.
